Mali Video processors provide advanced video technology combined with power-efficiency and one of the smallest chip sizes in the market to offer creators of mass market mobile devices support for a wide range of video technologies. Designed to scale from 1080p60 on a single core to 4k120 on the full eight cores, all variations offer stunning HD visual quality to end users.
As the resolution and quality of displays increase, efficient processing of the display output becomes even more important in a media system. Having a dedicated display processor that not only controls output to the screen but also enables the GPU to offload basic tasks such as multi-layer composition or image post-processing improves visual quality and reduces overall SoC power consumption.
Imaging and computer vision
Through the acquisition of Apical, Arm is able to provide cutting-edge imaging and computer vision IP that is based on fundamental research into human vision and visual processing. The technology enables electronic devices to capture visual inputs and produce high quality user viewing experiences, and increasingly to understand and learn from their environments, just like we do. Arm Mali Camera and Assertive Display IP powers many cameras and displays today, from smartphones to embedded and IoT devices.

Why Arm in multimedia
The Mali family includes the High Performance GPU Roadmap which is designed specifically to bring the highest levels of performance to premium devices with a particular emphasis on maintaining energy efficiency. In addition, the High Area Efficiency GPU roadmap focuses on delivering high quality graphics within the smallest possible area, and the Ultra-Low Power roadmap offers high quality graphics within an extremely low power budget for extended device battery-life. The Arm Mali Video processors also adhere to these values, offering a high-performance, low-bandwidth technology that scales to deliver protected video to a wide range of smartphones, tablets and SmartTVs. This has subsequently been joined by the Arm Mali Display processors, which offer content protection from download to display at significantly lower SoC bandwidth consumption.
When the graphics, video and display processors are implemented altogether in an SoC, Arm architectural benefits such as AFBC and Transaction Elimination come into their own and offer exceptional bandwidth savings. Software integration effort can also be reduced as each processor’s Android driver will work efficiently with any other Arm driver straight out of the box. This optimized Android multimedia stack addresses universally resource-consuming challenges such as integrating and optimizing processors from different suppliers or supporting regular Android updates. By taking advantage of Arm’s pre-optimized software stack, partners have more time to differentiate their solutions and can bring their product to market sooner.
