Why ARM in Graphics?

The ARM Mali family of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) scales to deliver industry-leading graphics including entry-level smartphones, cutting-edge superphones, tablets and SmartTVs. As a complement to the ARM Cortex™ Processor, Mali GPUs maintain the core ARM principles – high performance, industry-leading power efficiency and reduced system cost. The ARM Mali Video solution also adheres to these values, offering a high-performance, low-bandwidth unit that scales to deliver secure video to a wide range of smartphones, tablets and SmartTVs.

Mali Quick Facts

  • Number 1 GPU found in graphics enabled SmartTVs
  • Number 1 in Android tablets
  • In over 20% of Android smartphones
  • Over 100M Mali GPUs shipped in 2012
  • Found in over 200 end devices

Graphics Processors

The graphics-only solutions, based on the Utgard architecture, enable high-performance graphics in the smallest silicon area. Products based on the scalable Utgard architecture include the Mali-300, Mali-400 MP and the Mali-450 MP. These products provide scalable solutions for mass-market low to high-end solutions. Their raw graphics performance capabilities provide market leading graphic performance for SmartTVs, Tablets and Smartphones.

Mali’s Graphics Roadmap includes:

Mali-450 MP Mali-400 MP Mali-300

Graphics plus GPU Compute

ARM Mali Graphics with GPU Compute provides premium graphics solutions to high end electronic devices. The graphics performance capability of these products is higher than the Graphics only roadmap. ARM Mali Graphics with GPU Compute Midgard Tri-pipe architecture includes the Mali-T678, Mali-T628 and the Mali-T624.

Mali’s Graphics and GPU Compute Roadmap includes:

Mali-T678 Mali-T628 Mali-T624
Mali-T622 Mali-T604

Mali Video

The ARM Mali Video solution presents a broad range of performance capabilities combined with ARM’s system-wide approach to performance efficiency and security. The ARM Mali-V500 is the foundational product of the upcoming ARM Mali Video series.

Mali Technologies

Mali Technologies have been developed by ARM to allow increasingly more complex graphics within the power capacity and thermal limit of mobile devices. Both formats provide significant system-wide bandwidth reductions to ensure that end-users are able to experience the latest in graphics quality on any device. Adaptive Scalable Texture Compression (ASTC) is available on all second generation Mali-T600 GPUs. ARM Frame Buffer Compression (AFBC) is available on the ARM Mali Video Engine, future Mali GPUs and as a licensable IP for display controllers.

Use Cases

Graphics in consumer devices have come a long way. Making devices easier to use for consumers is one of the key motivators for end device manufacturers to include graphics technologies. Consumers now demand easy to use interfaces, faster web browsing, new ways to play games and improved and accessible camera functionality.

Mali GPU is featured in over 200 devices and is a market leader in mobile devices with the inclusion of phones and tablets. Mali GPU is also the market leader in Smart DTVs.
