Symbian OS

ask ARM*
*
*

Symbian creates Symbian OS, an advanced, open operating system that is licensed by some of the world’s leading mobile phone manufacturers (Arima, Ben Q, Fujitsu, Lenovo, LG Electronics, Mitsubishi, Motorola, Nokia, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp and Sony Ericsson) and is the leading OS on Smartphones: 15.9 million Symbian Smartphones shipped in Q1 2007, total cumulative shipments reach 126.4 million.

Why use ARM with Symbian?

ARM has been at the heart of Symbian since 1994, building a close partnership resulting in all Symbian OS Smartphones being built with ARM technology. As an ARM partner, Symbian is featured in the ARM Connected Community.

  • ARM and Symbian collaborate to provide Symbian OS with early access to new ARM platforms including ARM1176, ARM Cortex-A8 and ARM11 MPCore.
  • Symbian OS is created using RealView® technology

ARM has developed RealView Compilation Tools for Symbian, which are exclusively available to Symbian and Symbian partners. RealView Compilation Tools are developed to deliver the tightest code density to significantly reduce image size. More details about ARM tools available here.

Board Support Packages (BSPs)

To accelerate ARM Partners' time to market ARM offers example BSPs for our range of development boards and RTSM Models in addition to those already provided by Symbian. Symbian BSPs are created by ARM and based on the Symbian Developer Kit. Symbian OS licensees interested in evaluating these BSPs can obtain them for free from ARM under an Evaluation Licence.

Symbian OS BSPs currently available from ARM are:
