Cloud Connected On-Device AI Vision

Today’s smart devices must demonstrate secure connectivity, reliability, and maximum uptime, with smart computer vision and ML technologies wrapped up into a compact, rugged form factor.

To help device design companies meet these demands, Toradex, a Swiss-based engineering company worked with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and NXP Semiconductors to create the Apalis iMX8 (AI) Embedded Vision Starter Kit. The Apalis iMX8 helps simplify the development of computer vision and machine learning solutions for IoT devices at the edge.

The Apalis iMX8 enables development of cloud-connected computer vision and ML designs. The kit is ideal for computer vision applications and integrates two Vivante GC7000 GPUs, supporting Vulkan and OpenGL ES. As a result, the kit lets developers unlock the embedded vision and machine learning potential of the NXP i.MX 8QuadMax applications processor.

Featured Technology

Toradex’s System on Modules (SoM) are powered by Arm technology. The AI Embedded Vision Starter Kit’s SoM is based on the NXP i.MX 8QuadMax (i.MX 8QM) applications processor, which features two Arm Cortex-A72 cores, four Cortex-A53 cores and two Cortex-M4 cores.

Containing 4 GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 16GB of eMMC flash storage, the kit also features built-in dual band Wi-Fi (802.11ac) and Bluetooth (Bluetooth 5-ready). The kit is connected to the AWS Cloud via AWS IoT Greengrass, which allows the device to work even without connectivity.
