ARM Extends Software Development Tools for Cortex-M Series Processors with Keil MDK-Professional

28 February 2011

Enhanced development environment provides universal support across all silicon providers

CAMBRIDGE, UK – Feb. 28, 2011 – ARM today announced the Keil™ MDK-Professional software development environment for ARM® Cortex™-M series processor-based microcontrollers, providing support for any Cortex-M series processors from any silicon vendor.

Devices based on the ARM Cortex-M0, Cortex-M3, or Cortex-M4 processors are increasingly popular in the industry with many leading silicon vendors standardizing their microcontroller offering on the ARM architecture. At the same time the demand from developers for support across different silicon vendors is increasing. MDK-Professional supports the wide range of microcontrollers available from many different silicon vendors and enables embedded software to be migrated to the Cortex-M series processor-based device that best meets the application requirements.

MDK-Professional is specifically designed for the development of microcontroller applications and combines the ARM C/C++ Compiler with the Keil RTX real-time operating system and middleware libraries. All tools are integrated into µVision which includes project management, editor and debugger in a single easy-to-use environment. The ARM C/C++ Compiler offers significant code-size and performance benefits to the embedded developer; however, MDK-Professional can also be used with the GNU GCC Compiler.

The Keil RTX is a deterministic real-time operating system with small memory footprint that uses the advanced Cortex-M processor features. MDK-Professional includes a flexible File System and middleware for Ethernet (TCP/IP), USB, and CAN peripherals. The TCP Networking Suite offers multiple internet protocols and provides various applications such as HTTP, Telnet, and FTP Server. USB peripherals are supported by communication stacks for USB Device and USB Host along with several standard driver classes. Numerous example applications that are configured for various microcontrollers help you to get started quickly with your product development.

Additionally, MDK-Professional ships with the ULINKpro Debug and Trace Adapter, which enables on-the-fly debug and analysis of running applications. ULINKpro uses streaming trace to record every Cortex-M instruction executed. This delivers execution profiling and complete code coverage information for application optimization and certification.

“MDK-Professional extends the success of the popular Keil MDK toolkits,” said Reinhard Keil, director of MCU Tools, ARM. “With MDK-Professional we boost your Cortex-M series processor-based embedded application with essential components such as the Keil RTX RTOS, middleware and the code efficiency of the industry leading ARM C/C++ Compiler.”

MDK-Professional is available now. Order through Keil's direct or distribution channels (www.keil.com/distis). As an introductory promotion, all shipments of MDK-Professional made before 30th September 2011, include a ULINKpro debug and trace adapter at no extra cost. MDK-Lite, a feature limited Keil MDK, is available for download from www.keil.com/demo
