The ARM Cortex-A8 processor was introduced to the market in 2005 as the first processor supporting the ARMv7-A architecture.

Available as a high-performance single-core processor, the Cortex-A8 is widely shipped in a range of mobile consumer devices such as smartphones, netbooks, printers and a wide variety of other consumer devices.

The Cortex-A8 processor is supported by a suite of optimized IP targeted at mid-range solutions bringing highest efficiency levels and ease of integration. The Mali™-400 provides a mid-range graphics processing option for the Cortex-A8, and all Mali high-end, video and display processors are compatible with it. Our pervasive range of physical and system IP is also available as standard.

From high-end feature phones to netbooks, digital TVs, printers and automotive-infotainment, the Cortex-A8 processor offers a proven high-performance solution with millions of units shipped annually. The processor features a high-performance, superscalar microarchitecture with targets ranging from 600MHz to 1GHz and above. It is binary compatible with the ARM926™, ARM1136™, and ARM1176™ processors, providing an option for migration from Classic ARM processors.

With the advent of hi-bandwidth wireless connectivity (3G) and larger screens in mobile devices, the Cortex-A8 reached mass production in 2008. The introduction of the Cortex-A8 coincided with the tremendous ramp in the volume of smartphone sales.

The Cortex-A8 is designed to meet the needs of markets requiring high performance with power-efficiency, often integrating web connectivity.

Key target markets include:

  • Smartphones
  • Tablets
  • Set-top boxes
  • Digital TVs
  • Home networking
  • Storage Networking (HDD, SSD)
  • Printers
