The Cordio architecture offers choice and flexibility for Bluetooth low energy and 802.15.4 integration. The Cordio portfolio of products are available in several “Soft IP” configurations in addition to complete solutions. Configuration options include Bluetooth low energy 4.2, Bluetooth low energy 5, and IEEE 802.15.4 standards.

The features of Bluetooth 5 enhance the effectiveness of devices for the home and expand the capabilities for beacons. IEEE 802.15.4 supports the growing ZigBee and Thread device market.

Bluetooth low energy

Bluetooth low energy, currently Bluetooth 5, uses the Low Energy Core Configuration of the Bluetooth Core Specification, and sets the stage for a variety of new applications that need ultra-low-power wireless connectivity at low cost, opening new markets and industries.  This technology is particularly suitable for devices that need to transfer small quantities of data within a relatively short range. Like existing Bluetooth technology, Bluetooth low energy is worldwide, interoperable, and license-free.

Bluetooth low energy has moved away from a connection-oriented protocol to one in which devices can sleep for most of their lives. Bluetooth low energy substantially reduces classic Bluetooth technology’s peak, average, and idle mode power consumption allowing radios to work for long periods of time with very small battery power sources, or to utilize energy harvesting solutions. This capability positions Bluetooth low energy as a key enabling technology for the Internet of Things (IoT) in several new markets.

 

IEEE 802.15.4

The IEEE 802.15.4 standard, the platform for both ZigBee 3.0 and Thread, is an established standard for IoT used in consumer and commercial applications such as smart appliances for the home, or smart metering, as it focuses on low-power and low-speed communication between devices.

The ZigBee 3.0 standard, also known as ZigBee Pro is built on the 802.15.4 standard, and offers mesh networking, and adds network and security layers, and application framework.

The Thread standard, running on 802.15.4 radios, adds native support for  IPv6 with 6LoWPAN, and includes secure mesh networking, with an ultra low-power envelope.

Cordio-C50 is a Bluetooth 5 modem, a 802.15.4-2006 modem, protocol processing logic and link and MAC layer controller delivered as soft IP, with Power Intent and Implementation IP, associated test-benches and link layer and MAC firmware. Cordio-C50 supports changes necessary for the Bluetooth 5 radio including the 2 Mbps mode, long range, and advertising extensions. The 802.15.4 MAC also has features to support both Thread and Zigbee Pro upper layer stacks.
