The ARM Cortex-A9 processor is a popular general purpose choice for low-power or thermally constrained, cost-sensitive devices.

The processor is a mature option having been introduced in 2008, and remains a very popular choice in smartphones, digital TV, and both consumer and enterprise applications enabling the Internet of Things. As a single processor solution, the Cortex-A9 processor offers an overall performance enhancement of well above 50% compared to ARM Cortex-A8 solutions.

The Cortex-A9 processor is available with a range of supporting ARM technology. ARM Physical IP is available to support a synthesizable flow optimized for lowest power or highest performance, as well as a choice of hard-macros reducing risk and shortening time-to-market. Enhanced ARM Graphics IP like Mali™-T624 and ARM System IP such as CoreLink™ NIC-400/301 network interconnect and CoreLink DMC-342 dynamic memory controller allow a rapid system design.

The ARM Cortex-A9 processor delivers exceptional capabilities while using considerably less power than high-performance computer platforms. It is proven in a wide range of devices and is one of ARM's more mature applications processors.

The Cortex-A9 implements the full richness of the widely supported ARMv7-A architecture. Designed around the high-efficiency, dual-issue superscalar, and out-of-order, dynamic length pipeline (8 – 11 stages), the Cortex-A9 delivers exceptional levels of performance and power efficiency with the functionality required for leading-edge products across the broad range of consumer, networking, enterprise and mobile applications. The processor’s micro-architecture supports the configuration of 16, 32 or 64KB four way associative L1 caches, with an optional L2 cache providing up to 8MB of cached memory. The scalable multicore and single processor solution provide the broadest flexibility and are each suited to a variety of applications and markets. With ARM’s MPCore, up to four coherent cores can be used together to achieve greater levels of performance. In a single core implementation, the processor is targeted at low-power, cost-sensitive devices which require competitive power efficiency.

The Cortex-A9 is designed for a range of products as a result of its scalable size and configuration options.
