ARM Announces Availability Of New Trace And Debug Hardware

08 March 2004

What
ARM announces full availability of the RealView® Trace unit, which completes the latest generation of advanced RealView software development tools by enabling connection to the trace port of system-on-chip (Soc) devices with integrated Embedded Trace Macrocell technology™ (ETM™).

The RealView Trace unit is an optional add-on to the RealView ICE unit, which in turn connects to the RealView Developer Suite™  RVD debugger. The introduction of the RealView Trace unit coincides with the release of updated versions of the RealView Developer Suite, version 2.1, and the RealView ICE JTAG run-time control unit, version 1.1.

Why
The RealView Trace unit extracts information from ETM units, which have been implemented in real silicon, on ARM Powered® SoC devices, and passes this data to the RealView RVD debugger. This information flow enables the RealView RVD debugger to provide software developers with exceptional visibility of what is happening, in real time, within the SoC devices.

The RealView Trace unit introduces first support for ETM3™ technology, the version of the Embedded Trace Macrocell for the ARM1026EJ-S® CPU and the ARM1136® CPU, in addition to increased performance levels for all previous versions of the ARM ETM family (ETM1™, ETM2™, ETM for the ARM7™, ARM9™ and the ARM 9E™ core families).
