At the Linley Technical Conference, ARM will be presenting a paper entitled "High Performance/Low Energy Multicore Platform Technology For Optimum Application Flexibility". The presentation will examine the balance between high performamce and low power and outline how the creation of fully coherent sub-systems can achieve the optimum balance

Topic: Heterogeneous Multicore Designs Using a Standard ISA

Speaker: Kumaran Siva.

Abstract: Balancing performance and power demands different levels of processing within the same system. For example, control-plane workloads need fast CPUs, while data-plane workloads can run on multiple lower-performance CPUs. A heterogeneous system that matches separate high-performance and high-efficiency elements to each workload would be optimal. However, heterogeneous multicore systems can be difficult to program because of the elements’ different ISAs. Homogenous multicore SoCs offer a simple programming model but are not as power efficient. This presentation explores heterogeneous designs based on ARM ISA cores that accrue the benefits of heterogeneous hardware with the ease of development of a homogenous system.
