Company Overview

Company Overview
Synopsys is a leading provider of electronic design automation (EDA) software and services used to design complex integrated circuits (ICs), field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and systems-on-chips (SoCs) for the global semiconductor and electronics industries.

Synopsys is also a leader in providing advanced technology to address yield and manufacturing issues early in the design process, and in delivering pre-designed and pre-verified blocks of intellectual property (IP) that can be easily inserted into design flows.
Through its comprehensive solutions and industry alliances, Synopsys addresses the key challenges designers and manufacturers face today, including power management, accelerated time to yield and system-to-silicon verification.

Company History
During the past 22 years, Synopsys has grown from a small one-product start-up to a diverse company that is the technology leader in software and IP for semiconductor design and manufacturing, offering a complete solution from concept to silicon.

The company was founded in 1986 by Dr. Aart J. de Geus and a team of engineers from General Electric's Microelectronics Center in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. First established as "Optimal Solutions," Synopsys was chartered to develop and market the synthesis technology developed by the team at General Electric. Synopsys proceeded to pioneer the commercial application of logic synthesis that has since been adopted by every major electronics company in the world.

Products, Technology and Solutions
Synopsys' full suite of best-in-class solutions enables designers to create and verify complex integrated circuits (IC) and SoC designs from concept to silicon. Synopsys provides a complete front-to-back design and test environment, system-level to silicon-level verification, design reuse technology (IP), and professional services to help its customers get their silicon working quickly and accurately. Synopsys also leads the way in offering technology that creates a bridge between design and manufacturing to improve yield and increase predictability.

Synopsys' products help customers improve their designs in virtually every metric, including performance, complexity, silicon area, cost, power consumption and time-to-market.

What is unique about the solutions from Synopsys?
Synopsys provides integrated, comprehensive technology-leading solutions that can help give customers a competitive edge in bringing the best products to market quickly, while reducing costs and schedule risk.

Company History with ARM:
How long has the company been working with ARM?
Synopsys and ARM have been advancing design solutions to solve our mutual customers' key challenges for over 10 years. Beginning with our collaboration in 1997 to build ARM’s first synthesizable cores to very latest ARM Cortex™-A9 MPcore multi-core processors, we've been bringing innovation into practice and into products.

Why have you chosen to work with ARM?
We have chosen to partner with ARM, a recognized leader in IP and low power solutions, for the benefit of our mutual customers and the industry.

Over the last few years, we've worked collaboratively with ARM to optimize for low power in ARM processors-based designs, including aggressive leakage management, achieving leakage savings of up to 25x in silicon. These techniques are documented in the jointly authored Low Power Methodology Manual. This practical methodology, combined with the enhancements we've made to our tools and IP, enable mainstream adoption of these leading-edge techniques.

We take these findings and incorporate best practices into our joint implementation Reference Methodologies (iRMs) for designing the latest ARM processor cores like ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore multi-core processors with ARM Physical IP libraries and Power Management Kits (PMKs). Our reference methodologies take advantage of new Synopsys solutions like the UPF-based Eclypse Low Power Solution and tool features like hierarchical design planning and implementation.

ARM technologies that Synopsys supports?
Designers can use Synopsys’ full suite of solutions, tools, IP and services to implement a comprehensive range of ARM processors and ARM Physical IP-based SoCs.

What one experience comes to mind during your early years working with ARM?
We’ve had a long history of working with ARM and helped them move from an in-house custom-design processor to a fully synthesizable IP company.
