Company Overview

Company History

Barco Silex is a micro-electronic design house belonging to the Belgian Barco electronic group. Silex started as an ASIC design house in 1991 and was acquired by Barco in 1995, since then it has been known as Barco Silex.

Barco Silex offers ASIC & SoC design services as well as FPGA and DSP design services.

Barco is a world leader in display and visualisation solutions. Based upon in-depth market knowledge, the company designs and develops solutions for large-screen visualisation, display solutions for life-critical applications, and systems for visual inspection.

Currently Barco is active in the markets of medical imaging, defence & security, traffic management, avionics, media, events, digital cinema, presentation, simulation & virtual reality, edutainment, traffic & surveillance, utilities & process control, broadcasting and textiles.

Barco was initially established way back in 1934 in Belgium. The company then specialised in the assembly of radios with parts from the United States. Hence the name "Belgian American Radio".

Barco has gone through many changes since then. It is now a truly global company. Still headquartered in Belgium, and it has its own facilities for Sales & Marketing, Customer Support, R&D and Manufacturing in Europe, America and Asia-Pacific. Worldwide, Barco employs about 4,400 people and realised sales of more than euro 670 million in 2004.

Company Objective

Barco Silex offers a complete portfolio of high-end design services, from traditional ASIC/FPGA design to advanced SOC based system development, IP integration or design, and board design in the field of: Image Processing, Communications, Consumer electronics, Industrial electronics.

Company History with ARM

How long has the company been working with ARM?
We have been working with ARM since 1999 and we have been an ARM Approved Design Center since 2000.

Why have you chosen to work with ARM?
ARM has a large range of high-performance 32-bit processors. For any application, an efficient solution with all required advanced features (Java, IP's etc) can be found.

The AMBA protocol is a very used protocol and can be considered as a standard for the development of our IP's.

ARM technologies Barco supports?
System On Chip design with ARM architectures (AMBA, AXI) and ARM cores ((ARM7, 720, 926) + ARM IP integration. Programmable logic design including ARM core such as ACTEL.
