Microsoft Windows Embedded Enters Next Phase Of Evolution

Microsoft is renaming its embedded Windows operating systems, whilst providing additional offerings in key categories in what the software giant says is the next phase in the evolution of the product line.

Under the next phase for its Windows Embedded Business, the software giant said Windows Embedded CE, which runs on ARM as well as  x86, MIPS, and SuperH processors will be called “Windows Embedded Compact” when the next major release comes around in 2009.

Microsoft has just released a downloadable beta version of its newly renamed embedded operating system for x86-based devices, dubbed Windows Embedded Standard. The product was formerly known as Windows XP Embedded.

Microsoft said at ESC the renaming was designed to evolve the Windows Embedded product family in an intuitive way, making it easier for customer to choose the right platform for their needs.
