CE Devices With Wi-Fi Shipments Set To Boom

Shipments of CE devices with Wi-Fi are set to boom, reaching almost 1 billion by 2012, according to a report.

Wi-Fi is valued as a “Swiss army knife” technology in the consumer electronics market, according to market research company In-Stat, which compiled the report. Thus In-Stat forecasts compound annual growth rate for CE Wi-Fi devices through 2012 will be 26%.

In-Stat singles out digital TV as the second largest category of CE stationary devices shipping with Wi-Fi. “The sheer volume of digital TV shipments will make it a strong market, despite a relatively low Wi-Fi attach rate,” explained Victoria Fodale, analyst for In-Stat.
By 2011, cellular/Wi-Fi handsets will surpass mobile PCs as the large category of Wi-Fi devices, In-Stat concluded.
