Standards Forum LiPS Folded Into LiMo

The Linux Phone Standards (LiPS) Forum that, as of this month, its membership and activities will be folded into the LiMo Foundation, in a bid to further support and unify the growing momentum of Linux platforms in the mobile market.

LiMo Foundation is a dedicated consortium of mobile industry leaders working together to deliver an open and globally consistent handset software platform based upon Mobile Linux for use by the whole mobile industry.

The groups said the move will serve to accelerate the emergence of common mobile Linux specifications and implementations. They said it will also bolster the emerging mobile Linux developer community and support the creation of a range of new applications, services and end-user experiences.

The move will include LiPS Forum members from across the mobile ecosystem, including chipset suppliers, Linux OS and mobile stack vendors, handset designers and OEMs and regional and global wireless operators. It follows announcements by other LiPS members who have joined LiMo Foundation: ACCESS, ARM Limited, Azingo, France Telecom / Orange, Huawei Technology, MontaVista Software, Inc., NXP Semiconductors, Open-Plug, Purple Labs and Texas Instruments.

“LiPS Forum is proud of our standardization efforts, development activities and other achievements of the last three years,” explained Haila Wang, LiPS Forum president and CTO, Orange Labs, Beijing. “Today, our membership agrees that LiPS’ greatest impact can be realized by adding our members’ expertise and resources to LiMo Foundation. Together, the member companies can better strive for a unified and ubiquitous Linux-based mobile platform.”
