ACM/SIGDA Special Service Award To Industry Analyst
Gary Smith has been selected as recipient of a 2007 Computing Machinery/Special Interest Group on Design Automation (ACM/SIGDA)
Distinguished Service Awards in recognition for his contributions as Chief EDA Analyst at Gartner Dataquest for the past two
decades.
SIGDA, Special Interest Group on Design Automation is ACM’s professional development organization for the Electronic Design
Automation (EDA) community. ACM delivers resources that advance computing as a science and a profession. ACM provides the
computing field’s premier Digital Library and serves its members and the computing profession with leading-edge publications,
conferences, and career resources.
“We are honored to present a distinguished service award to Gary Smith,” commented Diana Marculescu, Chair of ACM's Special
Interest Group on Design Automation. “His contributions to the Electronic Design Automation (EDA) industry have been of significant
value to an ever changing industry.”
While at Gartner Dataquest, Smith led a team of recognized analysts that included Laurie Balch, Daya Nadamuni, Sharon Tan,
and Nancy Wu. The group is best known for their Gartner Dataquest Annual Report at the Design Automation Conference. Smith
and his team have been instrumental in reporting on and identifying industry trends in Electronic System Level (ESL), Electronic
Design Automation (EDA) and Embedded Systems industries.
Gary Smith is the founder and Chief Analyst for Gary Smith EDA (GSEDA). While at Gartner Dataquest, Smith was the Managing
Vice President and Chief Analyst of the Electronic Design Automation Service, Design & Engineering Cluster. Prior to joining
Gartner, Smith was a consultant in design methodology and worked in the ASIC end of the semiconductor business. While at LSI
Logic, Mr. Smith became an evangelist for the RT-level design methodology. Starting in the semiconductor industry, Smith was
involved in some of the first attempts at customer-designed ICs. He is a current member of the Design TWG for the International
Semiconductor Road Map (ITRS), editorial chair of the IEEE Design Automation Technical Committee (DATC) and serves on the
DAC Strategic Committee.
The award will be presented to Smith at the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Computing Aided-Design on Tuesday, November
6, 2007 at the Double Tree Hotel, San Jose, California.
