ORBexpress Supports Texas Instruments’ DaVinci Processors

Objective Interface Systems, Inc. has confirmed that ORBexpress communications middleware family supports Texas Instruments Incorporated's (TI's) DaVinci technology, including TI's TMS320DM644x system-on-chips (SoCs).

Embedded developers can now use the small-footprint ORBexpress middleware to easily leverage the performance benefits of TI's DaVinci technology, the company said. ORBexpress enables code portability across both the TMS320C64x+ DSP and ARM cores of the DM644x devices.

Objective Interface Systems said the move will speed up development of a host of digital video processing applications, including client-side video, security video surveillance, set-top boxes, video phones, automotive vision systems and more, for which DaVinci technology has been optimized.

"DaVinci technology is much more than a silicon platform," explained Greg Mar, worldwide SoC marketing manager, TI. "It encompasses optimized software, hardware and tools that allow TI developers to get products to market quickly. Objective Interface's ORBexpress middleware provides developers with an additional option to easily take advantage of existing transports between the GPP and DSP cores of DM644x processors to enable intelligent allocation of resources in any video-intensive systems."

"TI's DaVinci processors set a new performance standard for video security, video telephony and other video processing applications," said Joe Jacob, senior vice president at Objective Interface Systems. "ORBexpress significantly enhances the ease-of-development and performance of these applications. It provides the tools for simple and fluid distribution of logic and data throughout DM644x SoC-based systems, allowing the target processors - GPP and DSP - to operate at maximum efficiency."

ORBexpress is based on the Real-time Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) standard that enables real-time and embedded devices in heterogeneous environments to communicate seamlessly. ORBexpress fully supports the tool chain for TI's DaVinci processors, including: TI's Code Composer Studio Integrated Development Environment and DSP/BIOS real-time kernel. ORBexpress also fully supports third-party real-time operating systems, including Green Hills Software's INTEGRITY and MontaVista Linux, on the ARM portion of the DM644x processors.
