AMR-WB+ is a first-class compression technology for winning widescale acceptance of multimedia services that deliver speech, music and sound effects - services such as great-sounding ringtones, music downloads, packet-switched streaming, multimedia messaging, Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Services, DVB-H (digital video broadcast - handheld) and IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) messaging service and presence service. AMR-WB+ delivers unrivaled sound quality at low bit rates and excellent quality at higher rates.
A recommended ETSI/3GPP audio codec standard, AMR-WB+ is a hybrid of two technologies, ACELP® and TCX, respectively Algebraic Code Excited Linear Prediction® and Transform Coded Excitation, that delivers unsurpassed speech and audio quality for multimedia applications. High-efficiency parametric stereo (HE-PS) provides high-fidelity stereo image reproduction at the lowest demonstrated bit rates.
AMR-WB+ has a wide bit-rate range, with mono rates scaling from 6-36 kbps, and stereo from 7-48 kbps, reproducing bandwidth up to 20 kHz. Moreover, it is backward-compatible with AMR-WB, the mandatory wideband speech codec in the 3GPP Release 5 specifications (standardized in 3GPP and ITU-T).
AMR-WB+’s ability to dynamically adjust its coding bit rates in response to varying network conditions while preserving audio quality even at very low bit rates makes it the only codec that ensures that users of mobile streaming services experience a consistently high level of service quality as they move around. Its IETF-defined RTP payload and file formats support interleaving for robust streaming and forward error correction (FEC) for enhanced robustness. Coded AMR-WB+ media can be encapsulated in 3GPP or MPEG-4 file formats and used along the entire delivery chain in multimedia applications.
The VoiceAge implementation of AMR-WB+ is optimized for low-resource devices (low memory and computational resources) powered by ARM processors and is ideally suited for integration in handheld devices. Its CPU efficiency helps maximize per-charge operating time and preserves real-time performance. Written in C or C++, a compiled implementation is available for any ARM-powered platform. Support for a variety of operating systems including Symbian, WinCE/Mobile, Linux and Palm ensures the applicability of this turnkey solution to a broad range of manufacturers’ devices.
The VoiceAge team has optimized the AMR-WB+ standard specifically for the ARM platform. Our implementation has been validated against the reference test sequence for bit-exactness and works right out of the box. We’ve already solved the development and integration problems, so you can save valuable time and development costs. We invite you to try out this unique codec implementation now — an evaluation version is available to integrate and test with your design. Contact us at: sales@voiceage.com.
